It is not possible for the Royal Commission to conduct a public hearing in relation to every institution about which we have received allegations of the sexual abuse of children. The Royal Commission has received information about over 4,000 institutions. Because of the impossibility of conducting a public hearing in relation to each of these institutions we have carefully selected the institutions we have publicly investigated with a view to providing the government, the institutions and the public with an understanding of the nature of the problems which we have identified.
The case studies have been selected to ensure an appropriate geographical spread and also an appropriate reflection of the type of institution where survivors were abused. There may be a limited number of future case studies and the final hearing will take place in March 2017.
However, your story will help inform the Commissioners’ understanding of institutional child sexual abuse and will inform the recommendations of the final report.
De-identified private session stories will be made available as part of the final report and Messages to Australia will be published as part of the final legacy of the Royal Commission.
